Going Places Africa

Baine's Baobabs

In the early 1990’s, John Fox, Andreas’ father, began writing a weekly newspaper column in the national Sunday Nation. In the nearly three decades of the ‘Going Places’ articles, John has written on various topics, ranging from hotel reviews in downtown Mogadishu, restaurant reviews in Kenya to travel advice for exploring Vietnam and camping in Kenya.

Considering Andreas’ career in the bush, it was inevitable that some of his stories were destined for the column too. Many of those published articles can be found in this blog. However, the whole family has since got in on the act. Jan, Andreas’ brother, has done numerous articles and his monthly explorations are often written up. Lut, Andreas’ mother, wrote a few articles about health retreats in India and also her perspective on the epic road trip her and Andreas undertook to bring their old classic Range Rover, ‘Mzee’, back up to Kenya from South Africa.

John Fox is convinced we have a world record for the most family members to contribute to a national newspaper column. I’m not sure how we could even find out if that’s the case. He has often been encouraged to write a book or compile some of his favourite articles. That is where the Going Places Africa blog site comes in. As an effort to catalogue as many of the articles as possible, spread their readership and bring the column into the digital age, the blog was born in September 2017.
